SEND Monitoring

Report of SEND Monitoring Visit – 4 December 2017

Visit undertaken by Jo Ballinger (SEND Governor) and Emily Lee (SENCo)

New TA Structure:

Fynamore implemented a new TA structure in September 2017. This re-structure placed TAs in classes in the mornings and then assigned specific interventions in the afternoons. This was implemented to make best use of TA’s specific skills and training. For example, TAs with Speech and Language training would deliver all of the SALT interventions across the school. Mrs Lee reported that this was working well and that she would be meeting with all TAs to review how they felt this new structure was working.

Training:

Mrs Lee delivered a staff meeting on autism and creating an autistic-friendly classroom in the Autumn term.  During this training, staff watched a short video called ‘Amazing Things Happen’ which describes autism from an autistic child’s point of view. Mrs Lee has also used this video clip with a Year 3 class to help explain what having autism means. Staff commented on how useful and informative the training was.

New Initiatives/Support:

  • Jill Hitchman is now a qualified Play Therapist and supports with emotional needs pupils 1 day per week.

  • Pit Stop – every break and lunch time children who find the playground environment too noisy and busy can go to ‘The Pitstop’. Some children have permanent ‘passes’ and others can get daily ‘passes’.

  • Gardening Club – Mrs Hitchman and Mrs Lee run a gardening club at lunchtimes to support children who need to be outside but need more structure.

  • Peer Mentoring – some Year 6 children have been trained as ‘peer mentors’. Their role is to help other children who are having problems with friendships at playtimes. Pupils can ‘earn’ minutes during the week to have time with their peer mentor on a Friday.

Future Plans/Actions:

  • SENCo to hold Teacher SEN Surgeries – to discuss provision and support for any concerns throughout the school.

  • SENCo, Parent Support Advisor and Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA) plan to hold a series of ‘Parent Information Sessions’ on a variety of issues/subjects. Ideas so far are – ASD, Dyslexia, Behaviour. They will involve outside agencies if possible.
